Look and see all that we
learn about in third grade!
We began the school year learning about the Northeast Woodland Indians that inhabited the land that we currently live on. Next we learn about Connecticut, (past and present), and we end the year with a unit on Plainville.
Throughout the year, students will continue to focus on learning and practicing strategies that will make them better readers. We pick up on strategies that were taught in second grade and expand on those. Reading for a variety of purposes will take place throughout the year, as students begin realizing that some texts are written to entertain, inform, and even to persuade the reader. Students will become reading detectives in third grade.
In third grade, students continue to focus on narrative writing of both personal and fictional pieces. Students have many opportunities for being creative and choosing writing topics that interest them. Students are taught to use description and elaboration in their writing, and even to build suspense when leading to the main event.
In third grade, students begin learning about Nutrition and Healthy Habits. We discuss how important it is to maintain a balanced diet, good sleeping habits, practice good hygiene, and make safe choices. Later, we move onto the studies of Matter, Force and Motion, and end the school year with an extensive unit on Animal Habitats.
To start the school year off right, it is important that students remember to bring in their math packets that were given to them by second grade teachers in June. From those packets, we will know that students have used their mathematical skills over the summer and are ready to jump right in to third grade lessons and concepts. Skills addressed in third grade are so many, including, review in addition and subtraction, graphing, multiplication, grouping, fractions, working with geometric shapes, solving word problems, open-ended problems, and so much more.
It is my hope that this information is helpful
to students and families!
