Anti-Defamation League Program at MSP

Students at the Middle School of Plainville recently attended an assembly entitled Step Up, presented by the Anti-Defamation League. The Step Up assembly focused on stepping up to build a school of allies and reject name-calling and other bullying behaviors. The format for the program included facilitator Derek Hall from the Anti-Defamation League, a video in which students describe experiences they have had, and discussion opportunities from the middle school student audience.

Students Collaborate To Create Holiday Project

Plainville High School students in Dean Esposti's Technology Education class recently collaborated with students in the Capitol Region Education Council's Integrated Program Model (CREC IPM) program to construct wooden pear shaped shelves for the holidays. The Technology Education students prepped and helped build the shelves, also decorated by the students.



Local VFW Post 574 Supports the Linden Reading Partners Program

The Linden Street School Reading Partners Program  recently received a generous donation from the Plainville VFW Post 574’s Community Outreach Program.  On December 19th Steve Wowk of the VFW joined Linden Street School students and  their GE Reading Partner volunteers   for a holiday reading of the Polar Express  by Linden Street School Principal Paula Eshoo. Thanks to the donation by the VFW, the students each received a copy of the Polar Express  in support of literacy and the VFW’s s focus on remembering those who have passed, and celebrating the living.

PHS Students Perform at Walt Disney World

Members of the Plainville High School Band, Jazz Band and Choir, under the direction of faculty members Jeff Blanchette and Dominic Talotta, gather at Walt Disney World in Florida, where they recently performed.


District Celebrates 20th Anniversary of the Mentor Program

A 20th anniversary celebration was held on December 1, 2011 in honor of the Plainville Community Schools Mentor Program. The Mentor Program was launched in 1991 as a collaboration between Plainville Community Schools and General Electric in Plainville, and has grown to include volunteer mentors from local businesses and the community. The 20th anniversary celebration was held at the General Electric site in Plainville. The event featured guest speaker Dr. Susan Weinberger from the Mentor Consulting Group, as well as a number of mentors and mentees from over the years. The theme of the event was "Past, Present, & Future." State Representative Elizabeth Boukus presented proclamations from the Governor to Superintendent Jeffrey Kitching and John Legato, Leader-GE Volunteers Greater Hartford Chapter. Plainville Students Honored At Superintendent's Award Presentation

Twelve Plainville students were recently honored for receiving the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents' (CAPSS) Superintendent / Student Recognition award and certificate of excellence at the 24th annual Superintendent's award presentation.

PHS Marketing Students Hone Interview Skills

Students in the  Marketing Education I classes at Plainville High School led by faculty member Steve Slomski participated in a "mock interview" session with volunteers from  the AXA Equitable Life Insurance Company. Employees from AXA  Equitable also serve as volunteer mentors in the school district, and will continue to volunteer with Plainville High School students to enhance  job readiness and employability skills.

PHS Counseling Department Hosts College Fair

The Plainville High School Counseling Department sponsored a college fair on October 21. More than 100 colleges and universities were in attendance. The high school students were able to ask questions and obtain information from the representatives on hand from various institutions of higher learning. 


DECA Supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

On Sunday, October 2, 2011, Plainville High School DECA members participated in the  Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)  walk at Rentschler Field in East Hartford,  to fund juvenile diabetes  research efforts. The students had a great time raising money for a worthwhile cause, meeting the UConn Men's Basketball Team, and working together as a team. In all, the students raised approximately $1,100 for JDRF.


Wheeler Receives Surprise Donation!

On September 21st, the Wheeler School community received a pleasant surprise when representatives from Bob’s Discount Furniture stopped by to present Principal Catherine Frayler with a donation of $1,000 for the school. Wheeler was one of five Connecticut schools to receive a donation from Bob's, which periodically makes charitable donations to schools throughout New England, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Virginia.

PHS Recognizes Student Success!

172 students received 200 awards at Plainville High School during the first annual Plainville High School Academic Recognition Ceremony held on September 15.Awards were presented for academic excellence, outstanding achievement and special recognition.

2011-12 Convocation Kicks Off School Year!

Plainville Community Schools faculty and staff kicked off the 2011-12 school year at the Convocation program held on August 26. Speakers included Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Kitching, Plainville Board of Education Chair Becky Tyrrell, Assistant Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maureen Brummett, and  Plainville Community Schools Teacher of the Year Jennifer Murrihy.

Plainville High School will have shortened days on January 19,20,23 and 24 due to midyear exams. Dismissal will be at 12:10pm. No breakfast or lunch will be served on any of the exam days.

Preschool Program Has Immediate Openings for Role Model Students

There are currently openings available in the Plainville Community Schools Integrated Preschool Program at Linden Street School, which includes both role model and special needs students. If you are interested in having your "four" or "almost four" year old child screened for possible enrollment into the program, please contact Anne Walsh at (860) 793-3214. There is no fee for the screening or enrollment in the program.

No Child Left Behind Information

The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 requires school districts to report to parents the performance of students who are proficient in mathematics and reading. The Executive Summary of the Plainville School District and individual schools, along with a letter from Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Binkowski, can be found here.

 

Inclement Weather

In the event of inclement weather, the Plainville Community Schools may delay opening school 60 minutes, 90 minutes or 2 hours. The School Messenger automated messaging system is utilized to directly contact parents who have selected this option, in the event of weather-related closings or delays. In addition, area radio and television stations will broadcast appropriate announcements. These announcements will also be accessible on the Internet at Connecticut Weather Center’s website: http://www.ctweather.com.
